Modular Cathedral

This Cathedral was build in Lego Digital designer during 2016 and the construction took one and a half years.
It consists of over 21000 bricks and uses a lot of advanced techniques like stainend glass Windows, a lot of vertically placed bricks as well as huge parts of the building which are displaced by half a brick to each other.
The build is extremly complex, so it's only recommended for experienced builders.  If build, it's 87 cm high and it uses two 48x48 base- plates, so it measures 37x 78x 87cm. It's fully interiored, has benches, sacresty, Confessional and everything else a Gothic Cathedral needs and is devideable in 11 submodels.

I build it for everyone who collects and loves the modular building series and wants to complete his City with an epic cathedral.

The instructions consits of 14 PDFs made with Blueprint and a Bricklink XML for the parts, packed in a Win- RAR archive (399 mb).
If you have any Questions just send me a message.
Have fun while building :)

NOTE: The cathedral you see in the following Photos was build using some different colors or parts than in the instructions, so you might notice some differences.

NOTE: I fixed some problems with the Instructions #5, #13 and the Part list. But due to upload problems, I'm unfortunatly unable to upload it as package. In the case of the mentioned instructions, please use the 1-8 version an the 1-4 partlist instead of the included ones in the 1-7 package.

I will replace the 1-7 package with the 1-8 package as soon as possible.
Sorry for the inconvenience.

      Hey Brickfiles,
very impressive that you chose to use all new bricks, just like a real Lego set :P But I have to disappoint you a little... The cathedral is already around for a while. So I know from ~15 finished Cathedrals ,but there are probably some more around which I don't know about. One has even already been displayed in the official Lego store in Paris. But I haven't sold it here from the start, so none of the pictures found their way here because I can't post them myself :/
but your's is probably the first made completly out of new parts ^^
So thanks that you make the start with photos, I'm looking forward to it :D

wow, saw your wip photo. So looking forward to seeing the completed set! Thanks for sharing with us :)
  • Amazing creation. i'm gathering the parts now. I was wondering about your Priest minifigure. was that from a set or your own creation for the MOC.

    Very, very impressive!
At first sight, it looks like a huge step up from your opera building.
$40 is quite a hefty sum for the instructions, though. And if you add to this the cost of buying the 21759 parts needed to actually build it, this set would easily become prohibitively expensive for all but a few AFOL enthousiasts with deep pockets.
I highly encourage you to team up with eg. German reseller BlueBrixx or Chinese reseller Jeremy to get a Chinese manufacturer of cloned bricks to produce this set for you legally, which would make this set available to far more people and would ensure you get a fair share of the profit from these sets as they're sold.
    • 2 months, 2 weeks ago Das_Felixle Level 9 Designed this MOC DESIGNER
      Thank you :)
Yeah, the Cathedral is actually really a step up, since the Opera is based on a first Draft from approximatly 10 (I was ~13 back then) years ago. But the facade still fits wonderful into the City, that's why she's up here ;) My Lego- Skills weren't that developed back then, but the Cathedral is a current Model and a lot of time, knowledge and Experience went into it. The next model is on the way, a train- Station on 5 baseplates with 15000 parts.
In terms of price... yeah, the price of the parts is heavy. But the instructions are very fair priced if you compare it to other costum Modular Buildings and their part counts and the time and knowledge that went into it. Literally hundreds of hours went into it and studying the architectue to make it as authentic as possible.
The parts is something that I can't change easily. I contacted Bluebrixx, but the model is to big for them, therefore the Risk too high. But I'm thinking about giving it another run to find a way to Make this a set. If I find a way how it could work, I would have a lot more Ideas for more modulars.
But it still wouldn't be cheap to buy. I guess under 1000$ is not possible if it should be profitable.
If you have any more Ideas or useful contacts for that, please send me a message :)
Maybe It'll work. Time will tell.... ^^

Just purchased your instructions. hoping to build this in the nxt few months. it is an awsome building. thankyou for you efforts
  • 3 months ago make82 Level 5
Excellent model! I bought your instructions, and took one week to build the whole thing in LDD, including the stained glass windows, to do them, I changed the regular transparent flat bricks to studless plates, and ignored the inside window arches. Also, I managed to get the chandeliers and bell placed with chains and all, in LDD! It was a wonderful build!!
  • 3 months, 3 weeks ago JWholland2015 Level 5
Very impressive! You did a great job!
I am considering buying the instructions. Before I do that, I first want to orientate a bit on the required parts. It appears that the list of parts is not complete. For example, I miss the gold chains for the chandeliers. Do you think more parts are missing? Is the supplied parts list complete?
Thanks in advance for your response!
    • 3 months, 3 weeks ago Das_Felixle Level 9 Designed this MOC DESIGNER
Hello, I haven't had any records of missing parts in a long time, so it should be fine. I just tried to add It, but it seems like that Rebrickable doesn't know that part :/ anyway, you need 3 long chains and 16 Short ones, all in pearl gold.
Edit: Nevermind. Found & added them
Edit: Changed 8 to 16 short chains, as it should be.
      • 3 months, 3 weeks ago Tats Level 4
I uploaded the wanted list on Bricklink.
One error, as mentioned on Rebrickable :
        - part 60169 = 30104 (Chain 21 Links (16-17L)) does not exist in pearl gold.
I noticed that part 2362b = 87544 (Panel 1 x 2 x 3 with Side Supports - Hollow Studs) is so rare in reddish brown that it is impossible to get at a decent price.
Il will continue to check all parts :)

    Fantastic job !
    You wrote "
    devideable in 11 submodels".
Is it possible NOT to build the details inside, and consequently get a simplified wanted list ?
I'm chiefly interested with the external aspect, and I'm afraid the details inside require too much rare parts.
    • 3 months, 4 weeks ago Das_Felixle Level 9 Designed this MOC DESIGNER
Of course its possible to not build the inside, but you would have to strip down the partlist for yourself.  It would take to much time for me to be worth the price.  The download contains a Bricklink XML, so you can easily modify the wanted list. Every instruction also has a partlist at the end, that makes it easier. For the start, you can strip away everything from Instruction #5-interior and all interior arches from #13_arches. you can also leave away all the tiles in the interior and you can simplify the coloums.
But if you have a look at the inventory and sort the Items by price, you'll see that the inventory doesn't has that much impact once you leave the confessional out.
      • 3 months, 2 weeks ago Tats Level 4
At least, is there a XML for each PDF ? if not, that will be difficult to strip down.
        • 3 months, 2 weeks ago Das_Felixle Level 9 Designed this MOC DESIGNER
On the last few pages of every instruction is a list of Parts. It's not optimal but usable. Deviding the XML into severals wouldn't be a good Idea, because it would increase overall Shipping cost and would make ordering itself a lot more work.
          • 3 months, 2 weeks ago Tats Level 4
Thank you for your answer. My idea is :
            - modify some of the sub-models at the base of the cathedral with a software, in order to simplify non-visible areas
            - generate new "sub-wanted lists" for those modified sub-models
            - add them to the other sub-wanted lists (that's why it would be great to have them), to get the main wanted-list.

I have bought these instructions for this magnificent piece of art.
It's without any doubt the best and most detailled church/cathedral with instructions that you can buy on the internet.
The layout is stunning and the instructions are worth every single cent.

    Wow oO
    That is just amazing !
Too extensive for me (21 000 parts to buy oO !) but that's a really beautiful piece of art.

I've already sold this instruction on Ebay for over a year... a lot of people there build it as long- term project over several months/ Years. You could build it slow and steady ;)
