Finished this beauty, what a masterpiece, so clever building techniques for all these moving parts! Just wished the the rear spoiler would go a bit further up. Thank you very much for giving us the opportunity to have this P1 in our collection!
Now, what about the holy trinity? :D

can I do this car in purple or grey ? or pieces do not exist ?

[ltr]On the beginning - be ready for a long-ass post because I waited for this moment very long time. A year of orders and hunting for parts. Freaking orange connectors. God damn Air Scoop. Everything took some time for collect. This MOC, McLaren P1 was released near time when I bought my second Technic(as adult), the 911 GT3 RS. I knew that I want to see this beauty on my shelf no matter how much it will cost and how much it will take time.
[ltr]I had very big expectations about this MOC. Everybody was describing it as masterpiece. Jet - I wasn’t ready for that.
[ltr]This is masterpiece. THE Masterpiece, capital letters are justified here. I knew it in first pages of build, while assembling front diffuzor, I already saw that this MOC is on completely new level. Ok. Calm down. Let’s start one more time.[/ltr]

[ltr]The vehicle itself is a little bit legend. Successor of famous McLaren F1, designed from zero to be as refined as it’s possible, presented in 2012, powered by V8 biturbo and 7speed dual-clutch gearbox. Had all new-age systems on-board - active rear wing, KERS, electric engines all in carbon mono-cage… 100 km/h in 2.8 sec and 299 km/h in 16,5 sec… Enough to be named “Ultimate Modern Supercar”. And all of it does not include one thing. How beautiful it is. Aerodynamic cars are very often ugly but super effective. This one is managed to be both.[/ltr]
    • 1 month, 1 week ago szymanski1991 Level 11
[ltr]And here we are. Brunojj1 created instructions for make 1:8 model of it with Lego parts… Still do not think this is normal MOC. 136 panels. 3300 parts. He managed to put all of features that make this car special. Before I started the build I thought that this model is build by Lego parts. I was wrong. I build by pure awesomeness.[/ltr]

[ltr]Functionality. Another thing where I was wrong. I thought that this is super good looking car but with not so much functionality. I thought so because Lego 1:8 sets have Gearboxes, bigger Lego Fake Engines etc. I was so wrong. Actually there is plenty of functionality and in the end I prefer them than just Gearbox. Under front hood there are 3 functional knobs. Two of them controls butterfly doors on both sides(separately). Door are mounted in two places by low friction pins and by movable links to moving axles. Working smooth.[/ltr]

[ltr]Suspension. Of course - there is independent suspension for all the wheels. But there is something more, we can adjust car height. Yeah. Here it is, first time I see something like this (at least in sets or MOCs which I built). There is system allowing to elevate car to road spec or lover it for track spec(like in real McLaren P1). You can control all four wheels at once by rotating third knob under the hood or - after pull one axle under engine cover at back - only front wheels height.[/ltr]
      • 1 month, 1 week ago szymanski1991 Level 11
[ltr]Next Two functionalities are more common. Steering - smoothly working steering with Hand Of God knob in the center of dashboard for smooth turning front axle - or the working steering wheel.. There is no Lego Fake Engine here, there are V8 engine model based on axles going down by own weight and being pushed up by crankshaft. Torque is delivered by differential from rear axle.[/ltr]

[ltr]The spoiler is completely another topic. Reactable spoiler is based on 2 small Lego actuators and two other moveable elements. Knob hidden behind driver’s seat control height of spoiler via actuators. Second function is active airbrake. It’s connected to steering, activate by pushing gear under the car. When you rotating steering wheel, the spoiler moves to brake position. Like in real McLaren P1.[/ltr]

[ltr]About design I could write a complete essay. How the panels connect themselves on doors. How they are connect with line of back of the car. How all of it looks together. Pure perfection. This particular instruction winded the price of Air Scoop part to the cosmos. I don't know HOW designer saw that this part looks EXACTLY like exhaust pipe of P1 but it does. Also the rear lights looks awesome in red hose edition.[/ltr]

[ltr]Of course as in every build there are hard things here. Opening an closing the hood took many time because there are two axis of movement and adjust everything to correct look is hard(at least for me).[/ltr]
        • 1 month, 1 week ago szymanski1991 Level 11
[ltr]Instructions. Instructions are mostly clear and easy to get correct steps. The build contain many type of connecting parts (sometimes I was not aware It’s possible to… ) that sometimes it was hard to connect some parts in particular way. But whole build is doable. In the end those are pretty good instructions. Whole build is divided for modules, which we connect to rest of construction in correct time. Whole build is how… Great book that you don’t want to finish jet but you see that there is less and less pages to the end.[/ltr]

[ltr]I don’t know what I should with my life or Lego anymore. After this build everything will be dull. [/ltr]

Hello!  I would have a few comments on the instructions:
    1. Page 87 Step 29 2x 14 hose.  in the Inventar-list there are only 2x13 hose.
    2. "technic connector angled # 1 - # 6" please with denomination in the steps.  not visible on the print and on the PDF only at maximum zoom.
    3. Page 130 at step 20: 1 "Black Technic Beam 1 × 2 Think" is not in the inventory in this step.
    4. Page 22 Step 9 (3) The 2 black "Technic, Link 1 x 6 without Stopers" is here  better 2x gray "Technic, Link 1 x 6 with Stoppers" for less headroom.  Page 132 & 133 Step 8 is in the Instruction Gray Technic, Link 1 x 6 with Stoppers.  but it is impossible because the towball pin is installed on opposite sides and only one side is allowed.  here is better (maybe originally planned), the technic link from page 22 and 132/133 must be replaced.
    5. Page 173 & 181 Step 15 with blue axle-pin (with friction) and some steps earlier in tan (without friction)?
    6. I have some parts left after construction.  including 3 black "Technic, lift arm 1 x 3 Thick" and 2 Black "Technic, lift arm 1 x 5 Thick" I have counted the inventories of the steps together, I never come to the value of the parts list.
Gruß (Sorry for my bad English)
P.S. its a great Modell. In white with black wheel is the best look 😍

2 x 4459 high friction pins for what step /function is this? (sorry, i cant find this step in the Building Instruction)
für was genau sind die beiden  4459 Pin eigentlich vorgesehen? (kann es in der Anleitung so nicht erkennen)

It's for the edges of the spoiler so they don't move out of place as easily, but it's not integral to the overall function of the model. I find that they get moved out of place when removing and reaffixing the engine cover no matter what.

Do any of you guys have any experience with chroming out lego rims? Or spray painting in some silver color? The porsche rims Are quite dull compared to these Chrome rims 😊 please share experiences, what to go for and what to avoid
    • 9 months, 2 weeks ago __I__ Level 12
In the past I've used an auto-parts chrome spray purchased from Amazon (based on it's good reviews).
The results were OK but you'll struggle getting a true high shine chrome finish unless the parts are chromed by a specialist company.
There's a few sellers on Bricklink that provided chromed parts.
      Hope this helps

Just finished building this beauty! It's really challenging, and you must follow each step very careful, sometime the instructions are not very clear, I had to go back some steps when I was assembling the rear spoiler and it was a nightmare, but in the end it just adds to the pleasure of completing this model! really great fun and a marvelous addition to my Technics collection!
  • 1 year ago fredleg Level 18
Awesome! The technicality is at the highest level. And the design is absolutely excellent. The way some orange pieces are connected to each others is sometimes impressive. I can imagine that such a model represents hundreds hours of work. Congratulations! To me, the result is comparable (and someway better) to the Ultimate Lego sets - Porsche GT3 RS and Bugatti Chiron. Now, some comments. I think that there are some pitfalls in the instructions. Or maybe not, but here are the steps where I made mistakes (and sometimes important mistakes). I forgot the 2 parts of step 26 (which appear at the top of page 30). Then, it was impossible to place the front hood correctly... In step 42 page 119, I put together the modules before placing the red connectors (which also appear at the top of the page - I saw them too late). Impossible to go back... I also forgot to put everything together at step 37 on page 76. Well, in general, I had difficulties to put modules together, and at that time I don't know if separating modules is a strong or a weak point. The adjustable suspension was a real challenge, and I appreciated the technical solution. When reading the instructions, I was afraid for the 4 small gears that allow the adjustment. But, in practice, it works well. Last little comment: the large orange parts of the front hood are a little moving. In conclusion, the car is so beautiful that I handle it with a lot of care! Thanks a lot for this MOC.

Ist es möglich, auch für das weiße Modell eine manual-only Teileliste zu bekommen? 42096 habe ich schon und würde die Partsliste natürlich gerne gegen die Teile vergleichen, die ich durch das Set 42096 schon habe. :)
    • 1 year, 1 month ago myscrnnm Level 5
You can import the parts list from this model to Bricklink and then change all the orange elements to white. It's the fastest way to do it.
  • 1 year, 1 month ago Charly71 Level 12
Generally a very nice model. :) Some steps require too much of fine fingers / fine motor skills for me, though.

That may also be the reason for the following issue: Is there a mistake in the instruction regarding the alignment of the Wankel-type plates in the motor (p.82 in the instructions)? I can only turn them 2x90 = 180 degrees, then the motor blocks, even when isolated. Same for the rear axle when putting the rear axle module in. I can only turn the wheels in opposite directions for full rounds.

Possibly, the issue is also in one of the steps before (?).
    • 1 year, 1 month ago myscrnnm Level 5
There shouldn’t be. My engine worked fine using the latest version of the instructions. I would recommend retracing your steps. Can you see what is stopping the axle from turning any further?
      • 1 year, 1 month ago Charly71 Level 12
Yeah, that’s what I did. Obviously, I made the mistake and did not see it despite checking the instructions several times. Two of the ‘Wankel plates’ / cams needed to be inserted in the adjacent hole, of course.

As I'm building this now I just want to recognize you and Thorsten for the small details such as color coding the various functions within the chassis using different color connectors.  This helps the builder gain insight into what is being built and makes the marriage between the various modules easier to understand/get right! Nice touch.

Hallo.

      • 1 year, 2 months ago Ethan0080 Level 12
No I don't have the part list. I just mod it according to reference photos.

Debating if I should stick with the black rim or airbrush it to silver again

And the car wasn't finish yet since there's still a lot of color switch from yellow to black to accommodate the real car.
