I’m very excited to announce the release of my first mobile app – the Rebrickable LEGO Shopper.

The app is a LEGO shopping companion and it can help you decide if you should buy a particular LEGO set, or at least which LEGO set you should buy. Simply scan the barcode on a LEGO box (or enter it’s set number manually) and it will display several tabs of information to help you, some of which is new content not even available on Rebrickable.

Set Info

See the % of parts you already own in this set. If it’s a very high number you probably don’t need to buy it and might prefer to source the missing parts instead. This will use all your existing saved Build defaults and sets/parts list configuration.

Set Prices

See the known prices at other locations (for now only Amazon and LEGO.com with links to BrickLink etc). Useful to get a feel for any “specials” the store might be claiming. I'm hoping to add more data sources to this shortly.

Part Prices

Based on hundreds of BrickOwl stores, the average prices for each part is added together to get an overall "part-out" price of the set. Useful if you are into that sort of thing.

Alt Builds

A list of all the alternate build MOCs we have for the set. More MOCs = more value :)

Rare Parts

See which parts in the set are rare. Currently, this means a part appears in 3 sets or less for that color.

Valuable Parts

Lists the top 10 most valuable parts within the set, again based on BrickOwl store prices.

What If?

This tab answers the question – what else can I build if I buy this set? In addition to the list of alt builds on the other tab, it will re-calculate your owned part % for every single set and show you which ones get the biggest improvements.

Some features require you to login to Rebrickable to work, but if for some crazy reason you don’t have an account the remaining features will work fine.

Is it Free?

So far everything on Rebrickable has been free, however I decided to release this as a paid app with no ads. Initially I've set it to USD $1.39 which at current conversion rates and after Google's 30% cut, means I make about one dollar per install.

This is where I ask you to please support both Rebrickable and myself and give the app a go! I've poured my life into Rebrickable over the last 4 years (just ask my wife!), and would love to see some of that effort reflected in a successful app.


I’m always happy to hear feedback or suggestions anyone might have. I’ve just created a new forum for the app, or if you prefer to leave anonymous feedback go here. If you do like the app, I’d love to get a 5 star review on the Google Play Store. These ratings are essential for an app to stand any chance of becoming visible to general audiences through store or category listings. If you find a bug or issue please let me know via the forum/feedback and I'll do my best to fix it as soon as possible. I'm happy to hear feature suggestions too.

Of course, over time you can expect the functionality to grow and make the most of available features on Rebrickable as they are implemented.


It is currently available on Android, and if successful I will release it on iOS and Windows.

Update 20/01/2016: I've got an iOS app working and ready to go, but Apple's rules for Australian businesses are incredibly annoying and I'll have to figure out the tax implications before I can do anything more. Of course, this was after I paid their $149 annual fee.

    Are you aware your app is no longer available in the Google Play Store on Android? Its a shame really because I would love to give it a go. :)

      Several months at least, I haven't looked into Windows yet. I'm working on getting the Apple one done next but have some business related issues to sort out.

    Oh this is going to be fun to use!! I was able to look up sets by their part number, however I had trouble reading the bar code. Is there some trick to that?

    As has already been said, I too will have to wait for the iOS app. I love Rebrickable, it is one of the best LEGO sites out there.

    I hope you developed in a easy to redeploy app building environment as I really think to get the kind of success you are hoping for you will need to deploy to iOS whether or not the Android one sees the level of interest you are hoping for.

      Thanks everyone. Yes I built it with cross-platform in mind so it should be easy to deploy to iOS... once I pay their annual fee... and find/steal a Mac :)

        You don't need a Mac. What did you build it in? Adobe, Microsoft and Intel have the ability to simulate and publish an app to iOS.

        Adobe Creative Cloud has at least 2 apps that publish to iOS that I remember.

        Intel has XDK, tried it out once and it worked.

        Microsoft Visual Studio has tools to test and publish to iOS as well.

        The only real cost is the annual fee and the software you use to build the app.

          Professional apps are not simulated, they are tested in real condition.

            When simulations are complete and an app build looks ready then yeah, you would test in a "real condition". But when you build an app you can test a lot of it before you even have to pay for the annual fee.

            Besides, I wasn't meaning that you "simulate" a Mac, you simulate the iPhone/iPad/iPod with the software you are building it in. Microsoft Visual Studio has a device simulator built into it and VS Community is free.

            So really you don't even need to pay for anything until you are ready for the final live hardware testing. Then you need the developer license for iOS and a device to test it on.

          It's written in Cordova, so there might be something there. It's not a big concern though, I can get access to a Mac fairly easily... it's just a busy time of year.

    Can you say anything about the suspected data-usage? How much (or is it how many) mB is used to check and receive all the data.

      The biggest things to download are the images. The average set image size is about 15kb, the average part image size is about 20kb. So each scan would download at max a few hundred kb I would say. I haven't actually measured it though.

      after about half a day and checking about a dozen of sets it used less than 1 MB of data transfer.
      Just install the app over wifi, the checking itself uses almost no transfer.
